After meeting with Paul's oncologist, some things got clarified. His cancer isn't relapsing yet, but the drug he was on is no longer effective and new chemo treatments are beginning. Paul will start on a new combination of chemo drugs that should make his bone marrow cells more cancer-free so he can go ahead with a stem cell transplant. It should take somewhere between 2-4 months before he might be ready for the transplant at Stanford. The transplant will involve more procedures, time and isolation than simple harvesting, but that’s what all the docs at Kaiser, Stanford and UCSF agree is needed. We’re now stuck with a new regimen that includes a once-a-week shot in the stomach for Paul. Doesn’t sound like fun, but that was the better option…
Meanwhile, we meet with Tim's oncologists on Monday -- one here at Kaiser, one at UCSF. We're hoping that there are some other options available. Tim's getting pretty sick of being sick all the time.
